Strange Tales #109: The Sorcerer and Pandora's Box (1951)
Overview:
Strange Tales #109, published in June 1963, is a comic book issue written by Stan Lee, with artwork by Dick Ayers. In this issue, the Human Torch, Johnny Storm, faces off against a formidable foe named the Sorcerer, who wields powerful mystical abilities.
Plot Summary:
The story opens with Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, enjoying some leisure time in his hometown of Glenville. As he practices his flame control, Johnny receives news about a series of mysterious events plaguing a nearby city. Strange occurrences, including objects levitating and people vanishing into thin air, have left the citizens in a state of panic. Intrigued by these supernatural happenings, Johnny decides to investigate the source of the disturbances.
Upon arriving in the affected area, Johnny soon discovers that these events are the work of a mysterious figure known only as the Sorcerer. The Sorcerer is a master of the mystic arts, capable of conjuring powerful spells and manipulating reality to his will. Using his magical abilities, the Sorcerer has been terrorizing the city, hoping to draw the attention of powerful adversaries to prove his superiority.
The Human Torch confronts the Sorcerer, but quickly realizes that his usual tactics may not be enough to counter the Sorcerer's mystical powers. The Sorcerer casts spells that negate Johnny's flames, trapping him in a series of illusions and barriers that leave him disoriented and vulnerable. Despite his best efforts, Johnny finds himself unable to land a decisive blow against the Sorcerer, who seems always to be one step ahead.
As the battle progresses, Johnny devises a new strategy to overcome the Sorcerer's magical defenses. Realizing that the Sorcerer's powers are fueled by concentration, Johnny creates a series of bright, flashing fireballs that fill the sky, overwhelming the Sorcerer's senses. The distraction works, causing the Sorcerer to lose focus and allowing Johnny to close in on him.
With the Sorcerer's concentration broken, Johnny unleashes a final, powerful flame burst that incinerates the Sorcerer's spellbook and magical artifacts. Deprived of his mystical tools, the Sorcerer loses his abilities and is quickly subdued by Johnny. The Human Torch then hands the defeated villain over to the authorities, ensuring that he can no longer threaten the innocent.
In the aftermath, Johnny reflects on the unusual nature of his battle with the Sorcerer. He acknowledges the importance of adapting his tactics to different opponents, especially those who wield powers beyond the physical realm. The issue concludes with Johnny flying off, once again ready to face whatever challenges await him in the future.
Strange Tales #110: The Wizard and Paste-Pot Pete! & Dr. Strange Master of Black Magic (1951)
Overview:
Strange Tales #110, published in July 1963, is a comic book issue featuring two separate stories. The first, written by Stan Lee with artwork by Dick Ayers, features the Human Torch facing off against the Asbestos Man. The second story, written by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, introduces Doctor Strange as he encounters the villainous Nightmare.
Human Torch Plot Summary:
The Human Torch story begins with Johnny Storm enjoying a day in Glenville, but his peace is soon disrupted by news of a new criminal on the loose. Orson Kasloff, a brilliant yet bitter scientist, has developed a suit made entirely of asbestos, which grants him immunity to Johnny's flames. Donning this suit, Kasloff takes on the identity of the Asbestos Man and embarks on a crime spree, hoping to prove his superiority by defeating the Human Torch.
When Johnny confronts the Asbestos Man, he is shocked to find that his flames have no effect on the villain. The Asbestos Man counters Johnny's attacks with various gadgets, including a flame-dampening net that traps Johnny. Unable to use his fire powers effectively, Johnny is forced to retreat, leaving the Asbestos Man to continue his crimes unchallenged.
Determined to find a way to defeat his flame-resistant foe, Johnny returns to his lab and devises a new strategy. He realizes that while the Asbestos Man's suit may be immune to direct flame, it is not invulnerable to the intense heat generated by controlled fire. Armed with this knowledge, Johnny tracks down the Asbestos Man for a final confrontation.
During their next encounter, Johnny uses his powers to superheat the air around the Asbestos Man, causing the villain's suit to become unbearably hot from within. The heat forces Kasloff to remove his protective armor, leaving him vulnerable to Johnny's attacks. With his suit destroyed, the Asbestos Man is easily subdued and handed over to the authorities, marking another victory for the Human Torch.
Doctor Strange Plot Summary:
In the second story, readers are introduced to Doctor Strange, a master of the mystic arts. The story begins with a man suffering from terrible nightmares seeking out Doctor Strange's help. The man reveals that his dreams are plagued by a sinister figure who torments him every night, leaving him unable to sleep. Doctor Strange agrees to help and enters the man's dreams using his astral form.
Within the dream realm, Doctor Strange encounters Nightmare, a powerful and malevolent entity who feeds on the fears of others. Nightmare reveals that he has trapped the man in a perpetual state of terror and plans to continue tormenting him indefinitely. Despite the danger, Doctor Strange confronts Nightmare, using his mystical abilities to battle the villain within the dream world.
Nightmare proves to be a formidable opponent, manipulating the dream environment to his advantage. However, Doctor Strange remains resolute, using his knowledge of the mystic arts to counter Nightmare's attacks. Eventually, Doctor Strange manages to free the man from Nightmare's grasp by severing the connection between the two realms.
With the man's nightmares ended, Doctor Strange returns to the waking world, leaving Nightmare defeated but not destroyed. The story concludes with Doctor Strange reflecting on the endless battle between good and evil in both the physical and mystical realms, and his ongoing duty to protect the innocent from supernatural threats.
