Strange Tales #111: Fighting to the Death with the Asbestos Man! & Face-to-Face with the Magic of Baron Mordo! (1951)
Overview:
Strange Tales #111, published in August 1963, is a comic book issue that includes two separate stories. The first story, written by Stan Lee with artwork by Dick Ayers, features the Human Torch facing off against a new villain named the Asbestos Man. The second story, written by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, continues the adventures of Doctor Strange as he battles the diabolical Baron Mordo.
Human Torch Plot Summary:
In the Human Torch story, Johnny Storm is once again patrolling Glenville when he learns of a new criminal in town who is seemingly immune to his flames. This new villain, Orson Kasloff, a scientist disgruntled by the lack of recognition for his genius, has crafted a suit made entirely of asbestos, which makes him impervious to the Human Torch’s fiery attacks. Adopting the name Asbestos Man, Kasloff embarks on a crime spree, challenging the Human Torch to stop him.
Johnny quickly confronts the Asbestos Man, but he finds himself at a disadvantage as his flames are rendered useless against the villain’s suit. The Asbestos Man uses his knowledge of chemistry to create gadgets that can neutralize Johnny’s powers, forcing the young hero into a retreat. Frustrated and determined to find a way to defeat his flame-resistant foe, Johnny returns to the drawing board.
Realizing that he needs to think outside the box, Johnny devises a new plan. He understands that while the Asbestos Man’s suit may be flameproof, it isn’t immune to intense heat over time. During their next encounter, Johnny uses his flames to generate a high degree of heat around the Asbestos Man, causing the villain’s suit to become unbearably hot. Unable to withstand the rising temperature, Kasloff is forced to shed his protective suit, leaving him vulnerable to Johnny’s attacks.
With the Asbestos Man defeated, Johnny hands him over to the authorities, reflecting on the importance of using both brains and brawn in his battles against villains. The story ends with Johnny taking to the skies, confident that he’s ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.
Doctor Strange Plot Summary:
The Doctor Strange story in this issue introduces a new and dangerous adversary: Baron Mordo. The story begins with Doctor Strange receiving a telepathic message from the Ancient One, his mentor, warning him of a powerful new threat. Mordo, a former disciple of the Ancient One who turned to the dark arts, has returned to challenge Doctor Strange for supremacy in the mystic arts.
Mordo’s first move is to cast a spell that incapacitates the Ancient One, leaving him in a death-like trance. With his mentor unable to assist him, Doctor Strange must confront Mordo alone. Mordo, confident in his abilities, attempts to lure Doctor Strange into a trap by offering him a false truce. However, Doctor Strange is not easily deceived and sees through Mordo’s plan.
A battle of wits and magic ensues between the two sorcerers, with Mordo using dark spells and tricks to gain the upper hand. Doctor Strange, however, draws upon his deep knowledge of the mystic arts and his training under the Ancient One to counter Mordo’s attacks. The two engage in a fierce duel within the astral plane, where Mordo tries to outmaneuver Strange.
Despite the power of Mordo’s dark magic, Doctor Strange’s courage and quick thinking allow him to turn the tide. He manages to break the spell that has incapacitated the Ancient One, freeing his mentor and weakening Mordo’s hold on the mystical forces. With Mordo’s power diminished, Doctor Strange forces him to retreat, vowing to continue the fight another day.
The story concludes with Doctor Strange reaffirming his commitment to protecting the world from dark forces like Baron Mordo. Although Mordo has escaped, Strange knows that he will face him again, and he prepares for the challenges that lie ahead in the battle between good and evil.
Strange Tales #112: The Living Bomb! (1951)
Overview:
Strange Tales #112, published in September 1963, is a comic book issue written by Stan Lee with artwork by Dick Ayers. This issue features the Human Torch facing off against a dangerous new villain known as the Living Bomb.
Plot Summary:
The story kicks off with the Human Torch, Johnny Storm, enjoying a moment of peace in Glenville. However, this tranquility is soon shattered when a series of explosions rocks the city, causing widespread panic. The source of the chaos is revealed to be a mysterious villain who calls himself the Living Bomb. Unlike any foe Johnny has faced before, the Living Bomb has the ability to detonate explosive blasts at will, making him an immediate and deadly threat.
As Johnny investigates the destruction, he encounters the Living Bomb, who openly challenges the Human Torch. Their first clash is intense, with Johnny using his flames to try and contain the explosions. However, the Living Bomb proves to be a formidable opponent, as he can withstand Johnny's fiery attacks and counter with explosive force. Realizing that brute strength alone won’t suffice, Johnny must quickly adapt to this new and unpredictable threat.
Determined to stop the Living Bomb, Johnny devises a plan to outsmart the explosive villain. He uses his ability to control flames in more precise and creative ways, attempting to neutralize the Living Bomb's explosive potential without triggering a catastrophic detonation. In their next encounter, Johnny lures the Living Bomb into a trap, using his flames to create a controlled environment that contains the explosions while gradually wearing down the villain's defenses.
The battle reaches its climax as Johnny successfully disrupts the Living Bomb's ability to generate explosions. By overheating the air around the villain, Johnny forces him to exhaust his explosive energy, rendering him powerless. With the Living Bomb defeated, Johnny quickly apprehends him, ensuring that he can no longer threaten the city.
The story concludes with Johnny reflecting on the importance of strategy and quick thinking when dealing with such dangerous foes. As the Human Torch, he knows that each new villain brings unique challenges, and he must continue to grow as a hero to protect those he cares about.
