Strange Tales Annual #2: On the Trial of the Amazing Spider-Man! (1951)
Overview:
Strange Tales Annual #2, published in 1963, is a comic book issue written by Stan Lee, with artwork by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. This issue features a thrilling crossover between the Human Torch, Johnny Storm, and Spider-Man in a story titled "On the Trail of the Amazing Spider-Man!" as the two heroes find themselves at odds before teaming up against a common enemy.
Plot Summary:
The story begins with Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, enjoying his popularity in Glenville. However, Johnny becomes intrigued when he reads a newspaper article suggesting that Spider-Man has been spotted committing a series of daring robberies. The article casts doubt on Spider-Man's reputation, which piques Johnny's curiosity. Despite his previous encounters with Spider-Man, Johnny can't believe the web-slinger would turn to crime, so he decides to investigate the matter himself.
Johnny sets out to find Spider-Man, intending to confront him about the rumors. The Human Torch's search leads him to New York City, where he finally spots Spider-Man swinging through the streets. Without hesitation, Johnny challenges Spider-Man, demanding answers. Spider-Man, however, is not in the mood for explanations and assumes Johnny is there to apprehend him based on the false accusations. A heated battle ensues between the two heroes, with both using their powers to gain the upper hand.
As the fight rages on, neither hero manages to land a decisive blow, and the battle is interrupted by the arrival of the real culprit behind the robberies: a cunning and elusive villain known as the Fox. The Fox had been impersonating Spider-Man, using a sophisticated costume and gadgets to commit crimes while framing the web-slinger. Realizing they've been duped, the Human Torch and Spider-Man call a truce and decide to join forces to capture the Fox.
The heroes track the Fox to his hideout, where they face off against the villain and his gang. The Fox, aware of their pursuit, has prepared a series of traps to thwart the heroes. Despite the obstacles, the Human Torch and Spider-Man use their unique abilities to navigate the traps and corner the Fox. Spider-Man's agility and web-slinging skills, combined with Johnny's fiery powers, prove too much for the Fox and his henchmen.
In the final showdown, the Fox attempts to escape by disguising himself as one of his own men, but Spider-Man's keen senses and Johnny's quick thinking expose the deception. The two heroes capture the Fox and his gang, delivering them to the authorities and clearing Spider-Man's name.
With the Fox behind bars, the story concludes with a newfound respect between Johnny Storm and Spider-Man. Although they started as rivals, their teamwork and mutual determination to do what is right helped them overcome the villain's schemes. Johnny returns to Glenville, while Spider-Man continues his vigilante work in New York, both heroes ready for their next adventure.
