Tales to Astonish #50: The Human Top! (1959)
Overview:
Tales to Astonish #50, published in December 1963, is a comic book issue written by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber, with artwork by Don Heck. This issue features Ant-Man and the Wasp facing a new villain, the Human Top, a criminal with the ability to spin at incredible speeds, making him a difficult and elusive opponent.
Plot Summary:
The story introduces David Cannon, a small-time criminal who discovers at a young age that he possesses the uncanny ability to spin his body at superhuman speeds. Realizing the potential of his power, Cannon adopts the identity of the Human Top and embarks on a crime spree, using his spinning ability to evade capture and outmaneuver the police.
As the Human Top's crimes grow bolder, news of his exploits reaches Ant-Man and the Wasp. The duo quickly realizes that they are dealing with an unusually agile and fast foe, one who can generate tornado-like winds and become nearly invisible when spinning at full speed. Despite their best efforts, Ant-Man and the Wasp struggle to keep up with the Human Top, who easily slips through their grasp during their initial encounters.
Determined to stop the Human Top, Ant-Man begins studying the physics of Cannon's spinning ability, seeking a way to counter it. Meanwhile, the Wasp uses her agility and flight to track the Human Top, gathering intelligence on his patterns and weaknesses.
In a climactic showdown, Ant-Man lures the Human Top into a trap by predicting his next target. The trap is designed to take advantage of the Top's need to maintain momentum; Ant-Man deploys a series of obstacles and gadgets that slow down the Human Top, forcing him to lose control of his spinning. With his speed diminished, the Human Top is unable to escape, and Ant-Man and the Wasp manage to apprehend him.
The issue ends with the Human Top being taken into custody, vowing revenge on Ant-Man and the Wasp. The heroes reflect on the challenges of facing an opponent with such an unusual power and prepare themselves for whatever new threats may arise in the future.
Tales to Astonish #51: Showdown with the Human Top! (1959)
Overview:
Tales to Astonish #51, titled "Showdown with the Human Top!", was published in January 1964. This issue, written by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber with artwork by Don Heck, features Ant-Man and the Wasp once again battling the Human Top, a villain with the ability to spin at incredible speeds, making him a nearly unstoppable force.
Plot Summary:
The story picks up with the Human Top, David Cannon, who has escaped custody after his initial defeat by Ant-Man and the Wasp. Determined to prove his superiority and humiliate the heroes, Cannon refines his spinning technique, becoming even faster and more dangerous than before. Now, with a chip on his shoulder, he embarks on a new crime spree, taunting the heroes with each successful heist.
Ant-Man and the Wasp are alerted to the Human Top’s return and quickly realize that he has become a more formidable opponent. His increased speed and agility make him even harder to catch, and the public grows increasingly anxious as the Human Top continues to evade justice. Ant-Man, feeling the pressure, begins to doubt whether they can stop him this time.
Determined not to let the Human Top gain the upper hand, Ant-Man and the Wasp devise a new plan. They study his movements and patterns, hoping to find a flaw in his strategy. Ant-Man theorizes that the Human Top’s greatest strength—his spinning—might also be his greatest weakness if they can find a way to disrupt it.
In the ensuing showdown, Ant-Man and the Wasp confront the Human Top in a warehouse where he plans his next crime. The Human Top, confident in his abilities, underestimates the heroes. Ant-Man uses a specially designed device that emits a powerful vibration, causing the Human Top to lose control of his spinning. The Wasp, taking advantage of his disorientation, swoops in to deliver a series of precise attacks that further disorient the villain.
With his spinning rendered ineffective, the Human Top finds himself vulnerable for the first time. Ant-Man seizes the opportunity to shrink down and sabotage the mechanism Cannon uses to maintain his speed, ensuring that he cannot regain control. The fight ends with the Human Top crashing to the ground, unable to continue spinning, and the heroes finally subdue him.
The issue concludes with the Human Top being securely apprehended, his reign of terror brought to an end. Ant-Man and the Wasp reflect on their victory, knowing that their teamwork and perseverance have once again saved the day, while the Human Top swears revenge, setting the stage for future confrontations.
