The Avengers #1: The Coming of the Avengers! (1963)
Overview:
The Avengers #1, published in September 1963, is a comic book issue written by Stan Lee, with artwork by Jack Kirby. This issue features the formation of the superhero team known as the Avengers, who unite to face off against the villainous Loki, the God of Mischief.
Plot Summary:
The story begins with Loki, the Norse God of Mischief, plotting revenge against his adoptive brother, Thor. Loki, imprisoned on the Isle of Silence, uses his powers to manipulate events on Earth. He creates an illusion of the Hulk destroying a railroad track, causing the green giant to be mistakenly blamed for the disaster. The Hulk's friend, Rick Jones, fearing for the Hulk's safety, sends out a distress signal to the Fantastic Four. However, Loki diverts the signal to reach Thor, hoping to lure him into battle. Unbeknownst to Loki, the signal is also received by Iron Man, Ant-Man, and the Wasp.
Thor arrives first, and after a brief confrontation with Loki's projection, he realizes his brother is behind the scheme. Meanwhile, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and the Wasp track down the Hulk, who is hiding in a circus, using his incredible strength to perform as a strongman. After a brief battle, the heroes manage to convince the Hulk to join forces with them against a common threat.
The group travels to Asgard, where Thor confronts Loki directly. After a fierce battle, Thor captures Loki and returns him to Earth to face justice. However, upon arrival, Loki attempts to escape, but the combined efforts of the heroes thwart his plans. Realizing the power they wield as a team, they decide to form a permanent group to protect the world from threats beyond any one hero's ability to handle.
In the end, they agree to call themselves "The Avengers," marking the beginning of one of the most iconic superhero teams in comic book history.
