Plot Summary:
The issue opens with the Avengers searching for the Hulk, who had left the team in the previous issue. Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and the Wasp scour various locations, hoping to prevent the Hulk from causing any more destruction. Meanwhile, the Hulk, still feeling betrayed by his former teammates, encounters Namor the Sub-Mariner, who is also seeking revenge against humanity.
Namor convinces the Hulk that they should team up to take down the Avengers, as both of them have reasons to despise the team and humanity at large. Together, they head to the Rock of Gibraltar, where they plot their attack. Namor, being a powerful undersea ruler with a deep hatred for surface dwellers, sees the Avengers as a symbol of human superiority and wishes to destroy them.
The Avengers eventually track down the Hulk, but they are caught off guard by the alliance between the Hulk and Namor. A fierce battle ensues between the two sides, with Hulk and Namor proving to be formidable foes for the Avengers. The combined strength of the Hulk and the underwater might of Namor push the Avengers to their limits, forcing them to come up with new strategies to counter their enemies.
During the battle, internal tensions surface within the Avengers as Iron Man and Thor struggle to work cohesively as a team. Meanwhile, Ant-Man and the Wasp try to contribute in ways that offset their physical disadvantage against the Hulk and Namor. The Avengers are pushed to the brink, but their determination to stop the powerful duo prevails.
In the end, Hulk, frustrated with Namor's increasing arrogance and disdain for him, abandons the fight and disappears. Namor, now alone, is overwhelmed by the Avengers and retreats to the sea. The Avengers emerge victorious but shaken, as the team begins to realize the challenges that come with maintaining unity and trust among such powerful and independent heroes.
The Avengers #4: Captain America joins the Avengers! (1963)
Overview:
The Avengers #4, published in March 1964, is a landmark comic book issue written by Stan Lee, with artwork by Jack Kirby. This issue is notable for the return of Captain America, who had been missing since World War II. Captain America joins the Avengers in this issue, as they face off against Namor and the remnants of an alien invasion.
Plot Summary:
The story begins with the Avengers—Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man, and the Wasp—on patrol when they come across a strange sight: a figure frozen in ice floating in the Arctic Ocean. They rescue the frozen body and bring it aboard their ship, where they are shocked to discover that it is Captain America, the legendary hero from World War II, who has been perfectly preserved in a state of suspended animation.
As Captain America awakens, he is disoriented and confused, not realizing that decades have passed since the war. The Avengers explain what has happened, and Captain America struggles to come to terms with the fact that his old allies, including his sidekick Bucky, are gone. However, after a brief moment of grief, Captain America quickly adapts to the situation and agrees to join the Avengers, recognizing the need for heroes in this new era.
Meanwhile, Namor the Sub-Mariner, still fuming from his defeat at the hands of the Avengers in the previous issue, stumbles upon a group of Eskimos worshipping a figure frozen in ice (who turns out to be Captain America). Enraged by their idolization of a surface-dweller, Namor throws the frozen figure into the ocean, inadvertently setting off the chain of events that leads to Captain America's discovery by the Avengers.
As Namor continues his rampage, he encounters an alien race known as the Atlantean outcasts, who were left stranded on Earth. He manipulates them into attacking the Avengers, hoping to finally gain his revenge. The Avengers, now with Captain America as part of the team, must fend off the alien invaders while also dealing with the unpredictable threat posed by Namor.
Captain America quickly proves his worth in battle, demonstrating his incredible combat skills and leadership abilities as he helps the Avengers defeat the aliens. However, Namor escapes once again, vowing to return and continue his quest for revenge. The Avengers, now with Captain America fully integrated into their ranks, reflect on the powerful addition to their team.
The issue concludes with the Avengers welcoming Captain America as their newest member. Despite the challenges ahead, the team is invigorated by the return of the Star-Spangled Avenger, and Captain America begins his journey as one of the central pillars of the Avengers for years to come.
