Overview:

Fantastic Four Annual #1, published in July 1963, is a special oversized comic book issue written by Stan Lee, with artwork by Jack Kirby. This landmark issue features the Fantastic Four facing off against their arch-nemesis, Namor the Sub-Mariner, in an epic battle as he attempts to invade New York City with his underwater army.

Plot Summary:

The story begins with the undersea ruler Namor, the Sub-Mariner, brooding over his kingdom's isolation from the surface world. Having previously encountered the Fantastic Four and developed feelings for Sue Storm, Namor is torn between his desire for peace and his anger towards humanity for its treatment of his people. Influenced by his advisors and the tensions of his kingdom, Namor decides to take drastic action—he will conquer the surface world, starting with New York City.

Namor initiates his plan by assembling his powerful underwater army, including monstrous sea creatures and advanced Atlantean technology. The invasion begins with a surprise attack on the city, causing widespread panic. Buildings are flooded, the streets are overrun with water, and the citizens are helpless against the might of Namor’s forces.

The Fantastic Four quickly spring into action. Reed Richards, the leader, formulates a plan to counter Namor’s assault, while Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, uses his flames to hold back the encroaching waters. Ben Grimm, the Thing, takes on the massive sea creatures, and Sue Storm, the Invisible Girl, uses her force fields to protect civilians and shield the team from attacks.

As the battle rages on, Namor himself confronts the Fantastic Four, showcasing his immense strength and the unique powers of the Atlantean race. Despite their best efforts, the team struggles to match Namor’s power in the waterlogged city. Namor’s determination and his feelings for Sue create a tense standoff, as he offers her a place by his side as queen of Atlantis if she surrenders to him.

Sue, however, remains loyal to her team and humanity, rejecting Namor’s offer. Her refusal only intensifies Namor’s resolve, leading to an even fiercer confrontation. The Fantastic Four, realizing that brute force alone won’t stop Namor, turn to Reed’s genius. Reed develops a device that can temporarily weaken Namor by disrupting the unique aquatic energy that powers him. The team uses the device in a final, desperate attempt to stop Namor’s rampage.

Weakened by the device, Namor is forced to retreat with his army back to the ocean, but not before vowing that this is not the end. He swears that he will return stronger than ever to claim what he believes is rightfully his.

The issue concludes with the Fantastic Four victorious but weary. They have saved the city from total destruction, but they know that the threat of Namor and the underwater kingdom of Atlantis still looms. The team reflects on the complex nature of their relationship with Namor, recognizing him not just as a villain but as a ruler fighting for his people and what he believes is justice.
