The Avengers #2: The Space Phantom! (1963)
Overview:
The Avengers #2, published in November 1963, is a comic book issue written by Stan Lee, with artwork by Jack Kirby. This issue features the Avengers facing off against the Space Phantom, a villain capable of assuming the form of any person he encounters, creating chaos within the newly formed team.
Plot Summary:
The story begins with the Space Phantom, an alien from another dimension, arriving on Earth with a sinister plan to sow discord among the Avengers. His ability allows him to take on the appearance and powers of any individual, while the original person is banished to the Phantom's home dimension. The Space Phantom decides to target the Avengers, hoping to turn them against one another.
The Space Phantom first assumes the form of the Hulk, creating havoc and leading the other Avengers to believe that the Hulk has gone rogue. As the team attempts to subdue "the Hulk," the real Hulk, now banished to the Phantom's dimension, grows increasingly resentful of his teammates. The Space Phantom's plan seems to be working as the Avengers struggle to contain the destruction.
As the battle rages on, the Space Phantom switches between the forms of different Avengers, including Iron Man and Giant-Man, each time causing further confusion and mistrust within the team. The Avengers, unable to discern the true nature of their foe, begin to doubt each other's loyalty, playing into the Space Phantom's hands.
However, as the Space Phantom prepares to take on Thor's form, he makes a critical mistake. Thor, being a god, resists the dimensional displacement, causing the Space Phantom to be sent back to his own dimension instead. With the villain defeated, the real Avengers are returned to their rightful forms, and the truth is revealed.
Despite the victory, the events of the battle leave the Hulk feeling increasingly alienated from his teammates. Distrustful and frustrated, the Hulk decides to leave the Avengers, marking the first major rift within the group. The remaining Avengers, though victorious, are left to grapple with the fragility of their alliance.
